Penn State Hazleton Rallies from Early Deficit to Complete Doubleheader Spit with 10-7 Win
Game 1:
In a game defined as much by momentum swings as defensive miscues, Central Penn outlasted Penn State Hazleton 8–7, rallying late to secure a tightly contested victory. Central Penn wasted no time jumping ahead, plating three runs in the opening inning. Penn State Hazleton responded quickly in the second inning—but not in conventional fashion. Taking advantage of multiple Central Penn errors, Hazleton scored three unearned runs to even the game at 3–3. The home team then seized its first lead in the third inning when Josh Smeltzer delivered an RBI single, making it 4–3. The middle innnings turned into a tug-of-war, but Hazleton refused to go away. Dylan Colantone drove in a run in the fifth, and a sacrifice fly by Aiden Rodriguez in the sixth tied the game once again at 6–6. Both teams continued to trade blows in the seventh inning, with Central Penn briefly taking the lead on a wild pitch before Hazleton answered with an RBI fielder's choice from Briar Campbell to knot the score at 7–7. The decisive moment came in the eighth inning. Tanner McCoy, delivered a clutch RBI single to center field, scoring Jordon McCahan and giving Central Penn the 8–7 advantage they would not relinquish. Despite the loss, Penn State Hazleton showed resilience throughout. Smeltzer reached base four times with two hits and two walks, while Colantone added two hits and an RBI. However, defensive struggles proved costly. Central Penn committed four errors, but Hazleton couldn't fully capitalize late.
Game 2:
After dropping a heartbreaker in the opener, Penn State Hazleton flipped the script in game two of Friday's doubleheader, storming back from a five-run deficit to defeat Central Penn 10–7. Central Penn came out swingning erupting for five runs in the first inning, but unlike the first game, Hazleton responded with steady, relentless offense. They got on the board in the second inning with an RBI single from Gavin Wallace, then continued chipping away in the third. Aiden Rodriguez delivered an RBI single, and Trent Strohecker followed with another run-scoring hit to cut the deficit to 5–3. The comeback fully materialized in the fourth inning. Briar Campbell drove in a run with a single, and Ryan Racho added an RBI groundout to tie the game at 5–5, erasing Central Penn's early dominance. Central Penn briefly regained the lead in the fifth, but Hazleton answered in the bottom half. Taking advantage of a passed ball and timely hitting, they scored three runs, highlighted by RBI singles from Josh Smeltzer and Brandon Unger, to surge ahead 8–6. Hazleton kept the pressure on in the sixth. Rodriguez came through again with a two-RBI hit, extending the lead to 10–6 and capping a stretch of nine unanswered runs.
Rodriguez led the offensive charge, finishing with two hits and three RBIs, while Smeltzer scored three times and added an RBI. Unger was perfect at the plate with two hits and a run driven in, and multiple players contributed to a balanced nine-hit attack.
On the mound, Gavin Wallace was instrumental in the turnaround. After a rocky start by teammate Cooper Ansbach, Wallace entered early and delivered 6.2 innings of steady relief, allowing just two runs (one earned) while striking out five to earn the win.
